South Carolina Aquarium

Get up close and personal with the wildlife at the South Carolina Aquarium, which features a “Touch Tank” and a “Touch Pool” where visitors can pet creatures such as sea urchins, starfish, stingrays and horseshoe crabs. This popular family attraction showcases a collection of over 6,000 species of plants and animals including alligators, sharks, moray eels, pythons, sea dragons and Venus flytraps, as well as special changing exhibitions.

The South Carolina Aquarium boasts the tallest aquarium window in North America: the 385,000 gallon Great Ocean Tank. This tank, which is 42 feet tall, is the biggest exhibit at the Aquarium with over 450 animals including pufferfish, river otters and an enormous 280 pound loggerhead sea turtle.

South Carolina Critters

The exhibits at the Aquarium display the great variety of plants and animals that are indigenous to South Carolina from the mountains to the ocean. The building itself projects over the Cooper River, and the two-story windows and decks offer visitors spectacular views of the historic Charleston Harbour. The floor of the Aquarium’s Great Hall is inlaid with a rendering of the entire coast of South Carolina. The 15,000 gallon tank in the Great Hall features many colourful varieties of marine life that call the coastal reef areas near Charleston home.
