Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim

There is a rich history of Jewish worship in Charleston, South Carolina, and that history is reflected in the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (Holy Congregation House of God) synagogue. Established in 1749, it is one of the oldest synagogues in the United States. By the end of the 18th century, it grew to become the biggest Jewish community in the country. The congregation lost their first synagogue to the devastating Charleston fire of 1838. The current structure was built in 1840 and its impressive design was inspired by the style of the classic Greek temples. It has been named a National Historic Landmark.

The Reform Movement

The Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (which means Holy Congregation House of God) congregation had its beginnings as an Orthodox community. It began to adopt the teachings of Reform Judaism in 1824 and when the new sanctuary opened in 1841, it officially became the nation’s first Reform Jewish Congregation. It is still active today with more than 475 member households.
