Edmondston-Alston House

Tucked among the stately private mansions, the Edmondston-Alston House is must-see destination for visitors strolling along Charleston’s famous Battery who would like to explore the interior of one of these stunning waterfront homes. Built in 1825 by merchant Charles Edmondston, this historic mansion was one of the first homes to be erected on Charleston’s High Battery and features beautiful views of the Charleston harbour. After falling on hard times, Edmonston sold the house in 1838 to Charles Alston. The wealthy rice-planter made extensive renovations to the house including a piazza on the third floor.

A Glimpse into the Past

The Edmondston-Alston House is the sister property of the Middleton Place Plantation House. The 30-minute guided tours of the home reveal an exquisitely detailed interior and a fascinating collection of the Alston family books, art and furnishings. Antique lovers will marvel at the treasures displayed throughout the property. The kitchen and slave quarters of the compound have been transformed into a privately-owned bed and breakfast, 21 East Battery.

A Witness to History

The home’s position facing the harbour allowed many to watch history unfold when Fort Sumter was attacked in 1861 and the American Civil War erupted. It was from this home’s piazza that General Beauregard, the commander of the Confederate army, witnessed the first shots of the siege.
