Charleston Museum

Exploring Charleston’s history is a must for any traveller visiting this vibrant and scenic city. The Charleston Museum, situated on Charleston’s Museum Mile, is a perfect place to start. Founded in 1773, the Charleston Museum was the first museum built in America. The collection of permanent and travelling exhibits tell the storied history of the city and the South Carolina lowcountry, from the first settlers of “Charles Town” to South Carolina’s secession to life in the late 19th century. Rice and cotton export was an integral part of the area’s economic growth and the museum feature artifacts from this era, as well as items such as slave tags revealing the history of slavery in the South. The museum’s noted silver collection showcases George Washington’s christening cup.

The Historic Houses

The Charleston Museum also owns and operates the Heyward-Washington House and the Joseph Manigault House, two historic house museums. The Heyward-Washington House was home to Thomas Heyward, Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and once hosted George Washington. The Joseph Manigault House was home to a wealthy plantation owner and showcases what the household belonging to one of the city’s elite would have been like. Both are also located on Museum Mile and are designated as National Historic Landmarks.
